Message from Sanford School Department Superintendent Matt Nelson Hope all is well and everyone is enjoying summer. It was our intention to present our fall reopening of school plans to the School Committee this Monday, August 10th for formal action. We were hoping to make this timeline to allow all stakeholders time to make the necessary arrangements in advance of the starting of school. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to make a decision this Monday. Our plan is to present our latest plan / information to the School Committee this Monday to allow them an opportunity for feedback and to ask questions with the goal of formally making this important decision if possible the following Monday, August 17th at another School Committee meeting. It is a very fluid situation and we are in unchartered waters. We are trying to balance providing as much notice as possible to our stakeholders for planning purposes while also opening school safely under circumstances we have never experienced previously. It is very complex and we want to make the best decisions possible. We appreciate your understanding and continued patience. The agenda for this Monday's School Committee meeting will be released later today. We will be holding the meeting via zoom and there will be an opportunity for public comment. Dear Sanford Families, I hope everyone is safe, healthy and still finding ways to enjoy summer. Thanks to everyone who voted on the school budget. We are grateful and appreciative of the continued support from the Sanford community. I wanted to let you know that the Sanford School Department is actively working on our school reopening plans. We are continuing to follow the guidance of the Center for Disease Control and the state of Maine to develop a safe return to school and the highest quality-learning environment for our students whether that is a traditional in-classroom model, a virtual model, or a hybrid model that allows both face-to-face instruction and remote learning. While we are uncertain what the future will look like at this time, the health and safety of our students and staff will continue to be our highest priority. Our goal is to have a decision by early August to give everyone time to plan accordingly. I also anticipate a change to our school calendar to better align with Governor Mills Executive Order and other York County schools by moving our first day of school for students from August to after Labor Day on Tuesday, September 8th. Letter from Superintendent Nelson Sanford School Department Extending Distance Learning for the Remainder of the 2019-2020 School Year Wednesday, April 29, 2020 Good Evening, During her press conference yesterday, Governor Janet Mills extended Maine’s Stay-at-Home Order through May 31, 2020. For Sanford’s public schools, this means that “distance learning” will remain in place for the remainder of the school year. Classrooms will remain closed, with the expectation of reopening in the fall as conditions permit. As you may have seen, Governor Mills provided details of a four-stage phase-in “post-COVID19” model that placed the re-opening of schools in the final stage (no earlier than September 2020 dependent on the success of stages one, two and three). This four-stage plan also included limits on group gatherings and criteria for re-opening businesses. Still to be determined is whether summer school programs, athletics, end-of-year celebrations and the use of school facilities for various summer school programs will be allowed this summer. I will continue to carefully monitor the situation and we will communicate information as it becomes available and decisions are made regarding specific end-of-the-year activities (graduation, kindergarten screening, award ceremonies, etc.). Thank you for your patience as our school leadership teams continue to explore the various options and best ways to recognize students as we close out this school year. It may mean holding scaled back or virtual celebrations, or, in some unfortunate cases, canceling an event entirely. Safety will continue to guide these decisions and we will abide by the Governor’s plan to ensure the safety of our students, staff and community members. I am aware of the tremendous burden that distance learning has put on our students, staff and families. Historically, it is challenging to maintain student engagement as summer draws near so I have asked our teachers to adjust their schedules and not assign any new learning after Memorial Day. The last week of May and first week of June will be focused on allowing time for students to submit outstanding assignments, practice and review key concepts and areas of weakness, return books and technology and to retrieve personal belongings; your child’s school administrative team will communicate information regarding these schedules and processes separately. Please know that our primary focus remains the health and personal well-being of our students, staff and community members – and also the academic progress of our students. Student academic achievement is crucial as we prepare to return to the classrooms next fall. We do not want our students falling too far behind grade level expectations and benchmarks. I encourage everyone to continue their amazing efforts during this unusual time and I challenge everyone to finish the 2019-2020 school year strong.

This is message from Superintendent Matt Nelson. I am sure that many of you have heard the announcement by the Maine's Commissioner of Education encouraging schools to begin planning for distance learning through the end of the current school year. I wanted to let everyone know that we have already begun planning and we are proceeding with a measured approach that is thoughtful and strategic for our educational community. There are many factors and impacts that need to be considered before an official announcement. We are examining our approach to the upcoming April school vacation and are considering possible changes that would impact end of the year schedules. I hope to share more information soon. Reminder that starting today our school buses with will be delivering free lunch and breakfast “to go” at all of Sanford’s “big bus” bus stops. Deliveries will occur approximately three hours EARLIER than your child’s usual Wednesday early release day drop off time. These meals will be delivered Monday - Friday. Sanford School Buildings Closure Extended to April 27 Sanford School Department March 20, 2020 The following is a letter from Matt Nelson, Superintendent of Schools Dear Sanford School Community, I am writing to let you know that given the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the recent declaration of Governor Mills of a Civil Emergency, the Sanford School Department school buildings closure is being extended until Monday, April 27. This decision is based on information from the Maine Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Maine Department of Education recognizing that longer school closures may be necessary to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Even though our school buildings are closed, our goal is for learning to continue. I have been very pleased during this first week of moving to distance learning. Our faculty and staff have been working hard preparing additional learning resources and we have distributed technology K-12 in anticipation of an extended closure. I am proud of the work that our students, staff and community have done together this week and look forward to building off this success to keep learning happening. Distance learning will continue each weekday through Friday, April 17, at which point the April school vacation will begin as scheduled with the expectation we will return to school on April 27 if possible. During this extended closure, I want to continue to stress the importance of enforcing social distancing and practicing good personal hygiene. These are the two most effective measures of reducing spread. Students should not be gathering for social activities of any kind or gathering on school grounds for any reason. Students should remain connected to one another via technology to minimize the effects of isolation. We have provided meals at two sites across the city and hope to deliver lunches to all school bus stops beginning Wednesday, March 25. We will be releasing specific information as it becomes available. I-Pads & Additional Resources Available for K-4 students on Friday, March 20th Sanford Schools Thursday, March 19, 2020 The following is a letter from Matt Nelson, Superintendent of Schools This is an important message to let families of K-4 elementary students know that iPads and additional resources for learning will be available for pick up at all three elementary schools tomorrow, Friday, March 20th from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. At CJL and Willard School, parents will remain in their cars and provide the child’s name and classroom teacher for curbside pick-up. At Lafayette School, parents will be met at the front door. The Sanford School Department is being proactive in putting technology in your child’s hands. Students’ iPads have many apps children may use to support the work that has been done in the classroom. The distance -learning document that accompanies the device focuses on additional school learning opportunities in the event that school closings extend beyond March 27th. If you are unable to pick-up your child’s iPad and additional learning resources on Friday, please contact your elementary school’s main office on Monday during normal school hours to make arrangements to pick-up materials. Sanford Junior High hosted their annual Spelling Bee on Tuesday January 7th, 2020. With 42 contestants competing, it took over an hour for a winner to be crowned. 6th grader, Mia Cote, took home the title of SJHS Spelling Bee Champion and 7th grader, Noah Propper, was the respectable runner up. Mia & Noah will both represent Sanford Junior High at the York County Spelling Bee on February 4th,2020 at Biddeford Middle School. Best of luck Mia & Noah!

Bus #3 is unable to travel down Oak Street in Springvale due to an accident on the road. SJHS Block Party tonight 4-5:30!!
Last Friday our 8th graders concluded their Sea Perch Program. It was an amazing week, and I am proud of how our students met the challenges from the project. We even had a surprise visitor. Ms. Bonita Pothier, who is an aide to Senator King, heard about the Sea Perch Program and came to visit. I would like to thank Ed Cormier who is the STEAM Coordinator from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for collaborating with Ms. Sara Nason and Mr. James Cantara to organize this amazing opportunity for our students. Mr. Cormier also was responsible for acquiring the materials needed to build the ROVs and for organizing all the volunteers who came and assisted our students. Also, a big thank you to all the volunteers who showed up each day to help and to our 8th grade teachers for adjusting their schedules so, that the Sea Perch Program could occur. Well done!
Day 4 of the Sea Perch Program brought numerous smiles. Teams of 8th graders tested their underwater ROVs. Once students tested, and if necessary made corrections to their ROVs, they were given a new challenge, which is "What modifications could they make to their ROV that would allow it to contain floating pollutants or pollutants on the floor of the body of water. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Success! Many of the 8th graders ROVs were completed and given a quick trial this afternoon. Tomorrow the rest will be tested, and if an ROV is unsuccessful; then the team has to deduce why their ROV does not work and one up with solution. All valuable skills to be learned. A thank you to Ms. Strait who shot a quick video of her class's first successful ROV. The video is too large for alive feed so, I will post it as news feed.
To fill our pool of water to test the 8th graders ROVs, the Sanford Regional Technical Center's fire fighter program were asked to fill a rubber pool. The students and instructor from the fire fighters program used this opportunity to practice filling an emergency retention pond. Our 8th graders will be testing their ROVs in this pool to check and see if their ROVs are waterproof; and if the remote system works. This is very exciting!
Day two for the 8th graders' Sea Perch Program was messy one. Today was an important day as students had to wire their motors and waterproof them in order for the motors to operate underwater. Students used wax to encase their motors, and I apologize for the the amount of wax that might have found its way to your home. Tomorrow is an important day as students learn to solder as they construct their remote controls.

The Sanford Backpack Program holds a free food distribution on Thursday's at 9:30 am at St. Thomas School parking lot. All Sanford families are welcome. You can bring your own bags. Boxes/bags are also available. This morning distribution will end once school starts in Sept.
Sanford High School student-athletes participating in a fall sport must complete the Family ID registration prior to the start of pre-season practice on Aug. 19th. The link for family ID can be found on the athletic department web page. A current physical form must be on file with the athletic office and the Family ID registration must be completed before students will be allowed to participate.

Due to the weather, the 7th Grade Laudholm Farm trip is going to be postponed until Friday, June 14. Please make sure that your student wears appropriate clothing, including comfortable footwear such as sneakers. Also, he or she should have insect repellent, sunscreen, and plenty of water. If your student ordered a school lunch ahead of time, it will be provided. If not, he or she will need to come with a lunch and snacks. Cell phones wouldn’t be needed as Friday is still considered a school day and school rules still apply. School budget validation referendum next Tuesday, June 11th. The last day to request an absentee ballot is this Thursday, June 6th. The city clerk's office at City Hall will be open until 7:00 PM that evening for residents to come in person to vote or register if needed.
Attention 7th grade parents: In anticipation of 8th graders maybe relocating to the new SHS next year, tours of the 8th grade space will be given on the following dates and times: Thur 6/6 at 12 PM, Fri 6/7 at 8 AM and Tues 6/11 at 4:30/5/5:30/6 PM. Please meet at main entrance.

Sanford School Department sponsored programs ending after 5:00 PM are cancelled tonight 2/12/13 due to predicted weather conditions.
Thanks to everyone who supported last night's Sanford Backpack program's sold out 2019 Chocolate Benefit. Over 150 donors contributed items for raffle and auction. Another 34 sponsors provided financial support. The backpack program provides Sanford youth and their families with nutrient-dense food integrated with food education experiences to help bridge the meal gap that occurs when youth don't don't have access to school meals. Thank you Sanford Backpack program for all you do for our students and the Sanford community.
On January 31st, 2019, Sanford High School and Regional Technical Center hosted its first ever, “Celebrating Partnerships” event in the Agora Presentation Area of our new school. The event was part celebratory and part networking and focused on bringing together our school and community resources to create dialogue about ways to partner, such as: internships, job shadows, business tours, guest speakers, and ELOs. Community partners helped provide insight on necessary “real world” competencies and the skills they are looking for in their workers and school staff provided insight on curriculum and students’ skills and talents. The event was funded through monies awarded to Sanford Regional Technical Center (SRTC) by MELMAC Education Foundation through a Systems Innovation grant. Several local businesses and SRTC program instructors were present allowing for productive and fun collaboration time. Many thanks to Plants Plus for designing and providing the beautiful floral arrangements, Above & Beyond Catering for the delicious food and drink, and MELMAC Education Foundation for the monetary support.

This is a community- based initiative to promote healthy lifestyle choices for children, youth and families in Maine. The goal is to increase physical activity and healthy eating for children and youth.
