SPEAK OUT Gives Voice to Students

SPEAK OUT, sponsored by our local Lions Club, was held in the Performing Arts Center this morning.  Twelve students took advantage of this opportunity to think about important issues facing them, their community, and beyond; and then to express those ideas publicly. Each topic was unique to the experiences and passions of the speaker. After each speech, the speaker was asked two questions related to their content and message. Sanford Lions Club members, Tom Belair, Cathy Coutu, Cheryl Ryder, Monica Newport, and Kathy Germon served as our judging panel, and Emily Sheffield and Shawn Sullivan were our Questioners for the event.  A huge thank you to these community members for their attendance and support.

First Place ($75) was awarded to Olivia Martin, who spoke about Zoo Captivity; Second Place ($50) went to Noah Jett who shared his personal truth around depression; and Third Place ($25) honors were for Jade Jamison's Speech about "Why We Don't Need the Letter C."  Olivia will move on to the District Level of the competition in April.

Other Participants included: Gianna Beninati, Elizabeth Guillemette, Isabel Jett, Felix Meas, Jason McNickles, Sarah Nickerson, Niraj Patel, Mia Noon, Dona Sophea.

Each student should be commended for their courage to participate, and the exceptional way they represented themselves and Sanford High School would make anyone proud.  Congratulations to all of the students!  It was an amazing event.
