Picture of a students hand under a black light. There is powder on the hands to simulate germs.

As I was walking-through classes I watched Ms. Tibbetts our health teacher conduct a lesson with a 4th grade class.  Students were learning about how germs spread.  Ms. Tibbetts sprinkled a powder on each student's hands, and then with the lights off had the students see the powder on his/her hands under a black light.  Ms. Tibbetts then had the students go and wash their hands and look again under the black light again.  If the students did not do a thorough job of washing their hands remnants of the powder could be seen under the black light, and the students had to go wash their hands again.  This lesson emphasized why we stress washing our hands with soap and water as one of the ways to keep everyone safe and healthy.
