SHS Daily Announcements 10/28/2019   Red Day 

 

JUNIORS:  Please make sure you sell off the remainder of your calendars and turn them and any unsold ones back into Mrs. Pattershall in A237 by 10/31.

Hold onto your buttons!  SLAM (Spartan Library Advisory Board) will be presenting the movie, Coraline, after school in the agora on Halloween.  The movie will start at 2:30, and end around 3:45.  There will be free popcorn and beverages, and treats for sale. Join us for some spooky fun!

You and your parents will receive FREE assistance completing and filing the FAFSA when you attend the In-person help Session at SHS on October 29 from 5:30 on in room A-231. The FAFSA is the first step to applying for federal financial aid, and is required for students who plan to pay for college with the help of federal, state, or institutional aid such as grants, scholarships, work study and loans. Don’t forget, seniors must file a FAFSA to be considered for a $1,500 Maine State Grant.  FREE Pizza until it runs out!

 

Are you interested in going to college? Want to visit colleges, learn about careers, and try activities like ziplining and kayaking? If so, Upward Bound might be a great fit for you! This is a free program that helps students prepare for college. During the academic year we meet with students to work on academic, career, and college goals. During our summer program students prep for college with courses, college planning, electives, and field trips during 1-5 week-long programs at USM. Interested in joining? InkTober is a month long drawing challenge happening this month. There are daily drawing prompts and drawings are to be completed in ink (sharpie, pen or India ink). During Spartan time on October 31st, artists can come and show off their month of drawings and celebrate their work. Please see Mrs. Gillis in room B127 soon for details or look for posters in the halls. Don’t worry if you miss a few days, we still want to see your drawings! https://inktober.com/rules 

Thomas College will hold its Future Teachers Academy on November 8.  It is a free opportunity for high school students interested in becoming educators.  It is a wonderful career development/exploration opportunity for students.  It is up on Facebook and social media.  An email went out to over 400 students today.  Below is the description.  Also, here is a hyperlink to the same thing: https://www.thomas.edu/TC/FTA-19.html.

Attention Seniors, please remember that your Senior Photos are due in October and your Senior Information sheets are due in November. If you do not have the paper for those, they can be picked up from the door of D113.

CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS

 

Art Club is in B127 every Thursday until 3:30.

 

Key Club will meet every Monday night @ 6:30.

Tranquil Tuesdays are back during Spartan Time.  Sign up for the library on Tuesdays to read.  No school work or computers, just you and a book. Mrs. Raymond is passionate about reading.  She will kick you out of the library if you are not reading during this time :)

Hey epic gamers, the Video Game Club is now meeting every Tuesday after school from 2:30-3:30.

The Civil Rights Team will meet on Mondays at 2:20 in room B235.  We need help for the October 25 Day of Welcome!

The Environmental Club will be meeting on Tuesday mornings at 7:20 in Ms. Wests Room in the Blue wing E222.  Join us to decide what projects we will work on this year...will it be to bring back recycling to the High School or make the cafeteria green.

Peer Helpers will be meeting every FRIDAY in the small cafe beginning at 7:20 (or whenever you can arrive). Help give student tours, Thanksgiving baskets, lunch buddies, Special buddies and much much more! Grades 8-12 are welcome.

Sanford High School and Sanford Regional Technical Center support the FOOD BACKPACK PROGRAM. Students receive backpacks full of non-perishable food weekly to take home. We really need backpacks to make this program happen. Please donate NEW or USED backpacks.  Also, if you would like to know more about these resources please see your School Counselor.

Job Opportunities

 

Shawn McEwen from Sea Salt Lobster Company in Saco is looking for part-time and full-time production help. They break down lobster and ship it around the world.  He is looking for workers with reliable transportation and dependable attendance, who can lift 50 lbs. Community Service Opportunities

Willard School is looking for volunteers for their Halloween Party on the 29th of October 4:30-7:00. Please contact sinman@sanford.org Susan Inman if interested. Also they are looking   high school students to volunteer to provide childcare the first Tuesday of each month from 6-7pm for their PTA meeting.

We are looking for volunteers for Maine Band Directors Association State Marching Band Championships on November 2nd. We are hosting here at Sanford High School. The students volunteering will receive a free t-shirt and food while they are working. If the students work the entire show they will receive about 8 hours of community service. Please have volunteers sign up with the google form on the sanfordmusicboosters.org website. We can also use more food donations and that google form is also on the booster website.

 

Trunk or Treat @ Curtis Lake Church is looking for anyone willing to help out on the 31st with directing cars, delivering candy to trunks and clean-up.  If you are interested, please see Mrs. Pattershall in A237

 

For Spoiled Pets is a non-profit organization located in Lebanon which takes in rescued animals.  If anyone is interested in volunteering to get hours they can email Renee @ forspoiledpets@gmail.com

 

Curtis Lake Church Soup Kitchen needs help every Wednesday and Thursday from 5:30 on setting tables, serving meals and cleaning up. See Mrs. Pattershall in Room A237 if interested. Serve once, or as often as you need/want.

 

Random Fact of the Day: Dolphins can move each eye independently. They can move each eye up, down, forward, and backward, giving them nearly 360 degrees of vision.

 

Life Hacks from your school nurse: Olive or baby oil will remove sticker glue from most surfaces. Soak a rag in oil, let sit on the surface for 5-10 minutes, and wipe off. It will look as if there was never even a sticker on there!
